Investment Director

The Investment Director will generate and close middle market control acquisition investments in East Africa by sourcing, executing and closing new and add-on acquisitions for companies in the $5m-$15m EBITDA range. He/she will lead analysis the preparation of the business case and supporting documentation to execute transaction opportunities including presentation to the investment committee. In addition, the individual will take responsibility for businesses within the portfolio, working closely with ambitious management teams to implement the value creation strategy and achieve planned exits.  He/she will also lead in the preparation of reporting documentation distributed to the investment committee and investors and develop business networks to augment exit options. The individual will overall be responsible for the performance of assets within the portfolio to ensure the target return on each asset is achieved. The individual must be willing to take along-term view to be part of a private equity team managing $300 $500mn over a 10-year investment horizon of the fund.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead industry and market research to support the development of investment strategies and transaction opportunities
  • Lead the development of ideas for a transaction and deal structure
  • Author the investment thesis and identification of value creation strategies and exit options
  • Lead the financial due diligence process including overseeing modelling, valuation and analysis prepared by junior colleagues
  • Work with internal sector experts and external advisors to lead the due diligence process and validation of the business case including identification of key transaction issues
  • Work with legal, tax and other internal teams, through the transaction execution process, including ensuring transaction documentation and structuring are consistent with the business case
  • Prepare investment committee presentation material and other documents as necessary to secure institutional and regulatory support for transaction
  • Work in a flexible, dynamic, and team-oriented working culture that fosters collaboration, personal development, mentoring and skills development of junior colleagues
  • Assist in organization and co-ordination of large working groups to complete the execution of a transaction
  • Design the post-acquisition 100-day agenda, as well as setting KPIs for performance improvement initiatives throughout holding period  Implement the post-transaction strategy including setting up and directing value creation programs, managing inflight initiatives to completion and ensuring crossfunctional operational alignment
  • As needed, direct program management offices in specific portfolio companies in support of senior management
  • Work with internal resources and external advisors to continually improve operations, raise profitability and position asset for exits
  • Work with management and fund compliance officers to report on regulatory and ESG objectives including ensuring documentation and achievements are consistent with the business case
  • Lead the preparation of investment committee and investor materials to inform and maintain support
  • Conduct special projects as required
  • Network and develop new investment ideas to grow the business

Required technical/professional qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Masters or other advanced degree in relevant field
  • CFA or other finance/accounting qualification

Core competencies, knowledge and experience

  • Senior investment professional with 7+ years of relevant experience in private equity in emerging markets(preferably in SSA)
  • Actual transaction experience leading transactions in SSA of a minimum of USD 20mm on both investments and exits;
  • Actual portfolio management experience that has resulted in significant EBITDA expansion that has resulted in successful exits generating an IRR of at least 25%;
  • Proficiency in financial modelling, valuation and corporate financing  Experience in the deployment of equity and debt investments with a deep understanding of capital structure
  • Demonstrable experience in achieving exits from portfolio companies and achieving target returns  Existing relationships within the East African M&A deal sourcing and investment banking community
