Portfolio Operations-Manager

The Manager, Portfolio Operations will take responsibility for businesses within the portfolio, working closely with ambitious management teams to implement the value creation strategy and achieve planned exits.  He/she will also assist in the preparation of reporting documentation distributed to the investment committee and investors.  In addition, the individual will assist in development business networks to augment exit options.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the due diligence and other pre-transaction process especially on operational, strategic and management matters
  • Draft the post-acquisition 100-day agenda, as well as setting KPIs for performance improvement initiatives throughout holding period
  • Implement the post-transaction strategy including setting up and directing value creation programs, managing in-flight initiatives to completion and ensuring cross-functional operational alignment
  • As needed, direct program management offices in specific portfolio companies in support of senior management
  • Work with internal resources and external advisors to continually improve operations, raise profitability and position asset for exits
  • Work with management and fund compliance officers to report on regulatory and ESG objectives including ensuring documentation and achievements are consistent with the business case
  • Assist in the preparation of investment committee and investor materials to inform and maintain support
  • Work in a flexible, dynamic, and team-oriented working culture that fosters collaboration, personal development, mentoring and skills development of junior colleagues
  • Assist in organization and co-ordination of large working groups to complete the execution of the portfolio strategy
  • Conduct special projects as required
  • Network and develop new investment ideas to grow the business

Required technical/professional qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree  
  • Masters or other advanced degree in relevant field
  • CPA, ACCA, CFA or other relevant professional qualification

Core competencies, knowledge and experience

  • 5 + years of relevant experience in private equity in emerging markets (preferably SSA)
  • Prior experience in working with Boards of portfolio companies to meet investment thesis
  • Demonstrated experience in exiting at least one portfolio company and aligning stakeholders in exit process
  • Broad functional experience, ideally in several growth companies combined with interim management roles in transformation initiatives
  • Good combination of conceptual skills (setting up new structures, systems, processes) and “hands-on” implementation
  • Entrepreneurial creativity and passion to deliver on strategic goals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strategic and long-term thinker with strong analytical, and creative problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently and pro-actively in a fast-paced environment
  • Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to nurture collaborative work environments
  • Strong leadership skills; ability to provide direction and coaching to team members
  • Meticulous attention to detail
