The Deputy Head Teacher (Middle School) will report to the Senior School Head Teacher and work closely with the Senior Leadership Team, department heads, and other staff in ensuring that the highest standards of teaching and learning are practiced throughout the school, with a key focus on the Middle Years Programme (IBMYP, Grades 6 to 8), and in line with the school’s strategic plan.

S/he takes on a suitable teaching allocation, has a profound understanding of the needs of students in the relevant age group and the IB Middle Years Programme, ensures the provision of adequate pastoral support for students and is a collaborative, passionate, globally-minded individual with excellent organizational and time-management skills. S/he is able to set and fulfill the highest standards and expectations, is self-motivated, and enthusiastic about the development of students in Grades 6 to 8. S/he possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a sincere commitment to contribute to the work of the Senior Leadership Team.
 

  • Supports the Head of Senior School and provides effective leadership in the development and successful implementation structures and processes that support IBMYP students, especially in grades 6 to 8
  • Contributes to the production of a timetable that meets the learning needs of students and the requirements of the MYP
  • Ensures adequate pastoral support for students in grades 6 to 8
  • Role-models best practices in teaching and learning
  • Monitors assessment, reporting and data management
  • Contributes to staff performance management, School Policy development and implementation, ongoing professional development and staff recruitment

The requirementsQualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.)
  • 5 years of IB Middle Years’ Programme and/or IB Diploma outstanding teaching experience as well as previous Middle Years’ Programme and/or IB Diploma leadership experience in an IB World School

The position

The Aga Khan Education Services in East Africa operates schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Dar es Salaam and Kampala, and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both the national and international curricula.  It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

The appointee will provide leadership and direction for the human resource function at AKES in East Africa, aligned with the overall goals and strategies for the region, and promote cohesion and synergy among HR policies and practices in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. To be the successful candidate, you should have a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management with professional HR qualification.  You should have a minimum of 10 years working experience, including at least 5 in a senior management position, preferably within an education setting. You must have thorough knowledge of Industrial Relations procedures, labor laws and compliance requirements in the countries in East Africa and a good working knowledge of HR information systems.  You should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build and manage relationships at all levels of the company through coaching, counseling and mentoring.

The position

The Aga Khan Primary School, Mombasa is situated along Vanga Road in the serene environment of Kizingo estate. The history of the School dates back to 1918 when the Boys’ Elementary School was established.  On the 21st June, 1945, the foundation of the current building was laid and officially opened in June 1951. The Aga Khan Primary School Mombasa has been offering the National Curriculum with emphasis on provision of a holistic education as well as academic excellence. The school was one of the first few in the country to introduce computer literacy classes for young children.

The Head Teacher will be a visionary leader who will exercise an ethical and moral leadership to develop the school into a school of choice in Mombasa, improving its positioning in the market by enhancing academic, co-curricular, sports and leadership programmes as well as developing a culture that emphasizes ethics and values, pluralism, spirituality and excellence. Additionally, s/he will drive the academic and extra-curricular programmes, provide leadership to staff and learners, monitor performance against targets and quality indicators, and oversee day-to-day operations at the school.

 

The requirements​​​​​​Qualifications and Experience
To be the successful candidate, you should have a minimum of 10 years working experience, with 5 of those in leadership, managing school budgets and overseeing fee collections.  You should also have thorough knowledge of policies and laws governing education in Kenya.

The following will also be required:

  • Bachelor of Education, or Science or Arts Degree (Upper Second Class Honors) with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from recognized university.
  • Master of Education Degree in Leadership and Management.
  • Registration with Teacher Service Commission
  • Working Knowledge of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) curriculum
  • Proven consistency in class work performance
  • Publication of at least one research or journal paper
  • S/he should present evidence of involvement in facilitation and participation of professional development
  • Excellent team building skills, with proven experience in leading, motivating and empowering people.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
