About the programme
- Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu – Swahili for ‘let our girls succeed’. This second programme is a holistic six-year project specifically designed to strengthen the transition of these girls from primary into either secondary school or alternative, productive livelihood pathways. The project’s intervention logic is geared towards addressing complex, multi-dimensional and interrelated barriers which obstruct girls’ educational attainment and transition. Our work is focused on the most marginalised girls, so geographically we work in arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) and urban slums in Kenya.
- Funded by UK aid through the Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC), the project covers 540 schools – 480 primary and 60 secondary schools – spread across 8 counties in arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) and urban slums): Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit.
- It is implemented by a consortium of partners led by Education Development Trust; other members of this consortium are Concern Worldwide, Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT), Kesho Kenya and Pastoralists Girls Initiative (PGI).
About the role
- The Instructional Coach is a field-based position supporting the delivery of learning outcomes under the Girls Education Challenge Transition (GEC T) Kenya –Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu (WWW project). The post holder will provide leadership, coaching and mentoring support to class- room-based teacher education activities and will have primary responsibility for building the capacity of designated teachers to enhance learning outcomes for primary school pupils. The position will also contribute to addressing key challenges and issues impeding achievement of improved learning outcomes.About the organisation

- Support continuous professional development of teachers through training, mentorship and coaching on teachers’ instructional practice, adopting the project models.
- Support teachers to identify pupils’ diverse learning needs as informed by various sources such as records from their past performance and track their performance consistently.
- Support the teachers and wider school administration to design and devise meaningful teaching and learning resources and activities to suit the diverse learners needs with a focus on remedial learning, STEM, and inclusion
- Conduct regular research and incorporate the knowledge and best practices to implement suitable teaching and learning approaches.
- Conduct remedial lessons in collaboration with teachers and according to the project established protocols; assess and maintain an accurate record of learner’s progress.
- Strengthen teacher’s capacity to conduct learner’s assessment through regular follow up with teachers to ensure proper conduct and analysis of topical assessments and required records are maintained.
- Ensure weekly tracking of learners’ school attendance and conduct regular attendance spot checks as per the project guidelines
- Provide regular project reports on learner’s performance, attendance, identified learners needs, quality of teaching and reports on other project interventions
- Support school leadership to adopt project models and best practices to ensure sustainability of project.
- Support project activities in the Counties, including participation in regular project monitoring and contributing to sharing of best practices and learnings
- Minimum Diploma level teaching qualifications from a recognized teacher training institution. Bachelor’s Degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum of eight years of teaching in upper primary school, teaching experience in lower secondary will be an added advantage
- Knowledge of education sector development in Kenya.
- Knowledge and experience in working in informal settlements; Open minded, good listener with the ability to work well with others.
- Ability to provide encouragement and constructive feedback as teachers learn new skills;
- Demonstrated skills and competencies in early grade literacy and mathematics.
- Demonstrated skills as a teacher trainer and ability to professionally support teacher competencies.
- Basic IT skills such as email, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
- Skilled in supportive observation of teachers and learners.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
- High level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility.
- Ability to tolerate cultural, ethnic, educational and religious diversity.
- Enthusiastic and committed to improving education outcomes in non-formal settlements.
- Willingness to work overtime and ensure improvement of learners’ literacy and numeracy outcomes.
