Consultant – Copy-Editor/Proof-reader

Options is seeking a pool of proactive and trusted freelance Copy-Editors to edit/proofread Options’ copy in line with the organisations (or programme specific) style guide and editor brief, ensuring the intellectual rigour and editorial quality of Options’ publications and increasing the impact of our work.Responsibilities:

Depending on the text, copy-editing can involve light to substantive rewriting of sections of text, suggestions for structural changes and advice on tone/style/overall voice of the writing.

Proofreading:

Ensure the publication design is as intended (columns, spacing, branding)
Identify any typesetting/design errors

Both:

  • Create a list of acronyms if there are a high number of acronyms in the text (if required)
  • Check that document is written in British English
  • Identify and query:
  • Errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation, and in use and style
  • Clarity, ambiguities, irrelevancies, repetition and sense
  • The appropriate language level for the intended audience
  • Factual accuracy, consistency and house style (n.b. highlight any data-dependant information that may need to be updated before publication and check data is complete and correct in tables and figures)
  • Logical and consistent structure and style, including the hierarchy of headings (e.g. capitalisation, style etc)
  • Consistency of labels, captions and legends for illustrations or graphics (where applicable)
  • Presence and correspondence of cross-references, including names, references, tables, figures and footnotes (n.b. footnotes should not be used for citations; links should be written out, not embedded within text; and automatic footnotes within boxes, figures and tables should be re-added manually, immediately below the asset and indicated with a lowercase roman numeral)
  • Copyright acknowledgement and permissions, making sure all assets have titles and sources/credits, and all photos have captions
  • Libel, obscenity, blasphemy, incitement to racial hatred or plagiarism
  • Look out for over-use of technical jargon/overcomplicated sentences
  • Check that every table has a title, number and source (e.g. where it’s the authors’ own elaboration it could say: Source: authors’ own calculation based on primary research
  • Ensure the relevant copy is accessible from a disability perspective (particularly for specific Options programmes)

Person specification: 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Professional qualification or degree in a relevant subject (e.g. writing, journalism, literature etc) or comparable  relevant experience
  • 4+ years of proven working experience as an Editor, Copy-Writer, Content Writer or Ghost-Writer
  • Experience in editing technical document, making them more accessible, and in improving their readability and structure
  • Strong administration and organisational skills including good time management
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and under pressure
  • Sound interpersonal skills
  • Ability to shape content for different audiences
  • Meticulous attention to detail and initiative orientated, and ability to remain detailed-oriented and focused when processing large amounts of text/jargon/technical language
  • Strong computer literacy: facility with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills and copy writing skills (strong ability to write clearly and with good logic, and ensure that content has correct punctuation, grammar, and syntax.)
  • Proficiency with applying the principles of style guides, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, Harvard Style, to different types of writing and referencing

Safeguarding Consultant

Options seeks a Safeguarding Consultant for a period of 6 months. The Consultant will support the implementation of the Do No Harm, Safeguarding and Emotional Wellbeing Framework (hereafter DNH Framework), including the development of the necessary tools for effective implementation.Responsibilities: 

The Safeguarding Consultant is to support the ALM Programme in implementation of the DNH Framework, including the development of the necessary tools for effective implementation. In addition, S/he will develop a partners’ safeguarding capacity strengthening strategy and Coordinate and manage safeguarding matters during the upcoming sub-national political, economy, analysis (PEA) process (including primary data collection at community level) in Isiolo and Narok counties.

The consultant will train consortium partners on Safeguarding and the Code of Conduct, including appropriate conduct for all those involved in the programme and how to submit and respond to reports under the ALM Programme reporting systems
The Consultant will be responsible for coordinating Safeguarding matters for the ALM programme and across the different partners, which will involve travel to certain programme sites. The Consultant will lead on safeguarding in certain key workstreams and will provide safeguarding support and advice for all ALM Programme workstreams.Person specification: 

  • The perfect candidate should have the ability to navigate difficult circumstances with a calm demeanour and in a methodical, analytical manner with a deep capacity for empathy.
  • Understanding of and experience maintaining a consistent survivor-centred lens in safeguarding practices.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in programmatic diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Advanced degree in social sciences/humanities, gender, law, international relations, or another applicable field preferred.
  • 5 years or more years of professional experience with safeguarding principles, including capacity building on rights-based and survivor-centric safeguarding approaches
  • Should be skilled in identifying and mitigating risks and have strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Have an understanding and experience in gender transformative approaches to ending FGM/C.
  • Have experience of safeguarding, GBV or child protection work within Kenya/ East African region
  • Ability to communicate, problem-solve, and facilitate collaboration effectively with a culturally diverse and geographically dispersed team. Be ready to work remotely (including use of digital technology such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams etc), with occasional travel to programme sites within Kenya.

Options seeks a Talent Acquisition Manager to join our HR team. The post holder will be accountable for the end-to-end international recruitment process, partnering with hiring and bid managers on role briefings using a variety of sourcing channels to attract and retain the best talent in local markets and to build on brand awareness.Responsibilities: 

  • Working across functions in our countries of operation e.g., Africa and Asia, the objective of the role is to manage, build upon and deliver Options’ end-to-end recruitment strategy that supports the sourcing and hiring of excellent candidates for the organisation’s programmes,
  • Sourcing and recruiting employees and engaging consultants for proposals and bids in conjunction with the New Business and Partnership (NBP) team.
  • Responsible for providing local guidance on best practice recruitment principles to our hiring managers that aligns with Options diversity, equity and inclusion strategy and donor compliance requirements.
  • Building brand awareness for potential recruits in Options existing and potential countries of operation e.g. through social media such as LinkedIn; the proactive management of consultants via our HRIS database (Cezanne).
  • Developing and delivering effective recruitment marketing approaches.
  • Providing HR advice and guidance on behalf of the HR function as required to our existing programme portfolio and to work with HR team to review and develop retention strategies

Person specification: 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Ideally educated to degree level in a relevant subject such as Human Resource Management.
  • Previous experience of delivering an end-to-end international recruitment strategy, including good working knowledge of international labour law and relocation packages is highly advantageous
  • Comprehensive experience of leading on complex recruitment activities for bids and projects often within tight timeframes.
  • International working experience in a human resource / recruitment management position in a busy HR environment, ideally Africa or Asia, is highly desirable.
  • Good understanding of the candidate pre-screening compliance requirements of donors and UK Government departments such as FCDO would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and to lead internal and external stakeholder meetings is considered key for success in this position.
  • Experience of implementing succession planning and employee retention schemes.
