LEGAL/POLICY ADVISER, CHILD RIGHTS AND DIGITAL RIGHTS (3257)

About the role:

As Legal Adviser or Policy Adviser you will work closely with country and thematic researchers, advocates, media officers and campaigners in the International Secretariat and Sections/Structures to ensure human rights law and the organisation’s human rights policies are applied and advocated in an effective manner through research projects, advocacy initiatives, media and campaigns. You will lead on and/or significantly contribute to specific projects and activities related to the organisation’s priorities, primarily those pertaining to children’s digital rights. You will also work with colleagues in the Law and Policy Programme to ensure effective, coherent and timely output reviews and policy consultations especially as they pertain to the aforementioned areas. You will be expected to bring and further develop specific areas of expertise, including on children’s rights and digital rights.

Depending on the post-holder’s background and experience, the position will be one of Legal Adviser or Policy Adviser.

About you:

You will have substantial expertise and professional experience in human rights law, including excellent expertise in the area of children’s rights. Good understanding of key technologies, in particular digital technologies would be a strong asset. Good knowledge of international humanitarian law, politics, and/or international relations would be an additional asset. You will have experience in the legal profession, in inter-governmental organisations, human rights NGOs or social movements. You will have demonstrated legal drafting and analytical skills, e.g. through experience in litigation or the application of international law, including international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and/or criminal law. You will also bring strong advisory and communication skills, including with a view to conduct effective advocacy.

You will have demonstrated experience in research and advocacy on human rights issues, as well as experience in or working with the legal profession, inter-governmental organisations and/or human rights NGOs. You will have demonstrated legal drafting and analytical skills, e.g. through experience in the application of international law. You will also bring strong advisory and communication skills, including with a view to conduct effective advocacy.

You will have experience of planning, organizing and prioritising work under pressure and to deadlines.  Excellent team skills are essential in this position. You will also have excellent external representational skills. You will have excellent written and verbal English; the ability to work to a high professional level in another widely used language will be a significant advantage.
