Climate Justice Policy Lead

About the role

This is an exciting time for a new Christian Aid Climate Justice Policy Lead we have just restrategised to refocus Christian Aid’s Climate Justice work on Climate Finance, Resilience Building /Adaptation and the Green Transition.  Recognising that climate change hits people living in poverty hardest and that energy poverty is one of the biggest barriers to development, this role pull together these strands of work into a coherent strategy building on many years of climate policy expertise, programming and working with an extensive global partner network to deliver transformative change for people living in poverty. About you

You will be a climate policy expert in one of the fields we work in, who is an experienced networker able to influence at all levels, as at home within the UNFCCC as with a grassroots women’s group in a village in Kenya. Comfortable with both qualitative and quantitive research methods you will be able to demonstrate how you have developed policy and used your advocacy experience to make significant change in the Climate Justice area and within climate negotiations.

Driver / Logistics Assistant

Key Outcomes:

Fleet Management

  • Travel plan management for all staff and visitors and driving staff, visitors, goods or service providers on strategic trips, to high-risk contexts or on long distances.
  • Fleet management ensuring that all vehicles are well maintained, insured, sufficiently fueled, clean and stocked with safety equipment.
  • Ensure that staff assigned any vehicle hand them back in good condition, with vehicle logs filled appropriately filled and a checklist of car condition and safety equipment done.
  • Ensure vehicles logs, maintenance logs are appropriately kept within agreed frameworks.
  • Ensure efficient use of vehicles, avoiding single person journeys and unnecessary movements through careful planning and facilitation of effective communication amongst staff needing transport support services.
  • Positive communication and successful negotiation (in line with Christian Aid’s policies and procedures) with officials and security or police forces, particularly at check points and border crossings.
  • Communication devices properly used and maintained.
  • All paperwork for vehicle, deliveries or other documentation correctly completed and recorded.

About you

Candidates should be educated to at least secondary school general certificate level with training in driving and must have valid driving license and any other documentation required to drive a vehicle and passengers.  You should have extensive experience in driving within the country and understanding of the various terrains in country and possess skills and expertise in dealing with security and other officials in ensuring adherence to traffic rules.

Project Officer-Emergency and Humanitarian (2 Positions)

About the role

This role is responsible for developing and implementing emergency preparedness and response plans, and for the overall coordination, planning, provision of technical direction and oversight to local partners implementing humanitarian interventions in Christian Aid.

The role is expected to contribute to the development of Christian Aid policy, strategy, thought leadership and communication in Humanitarian Emergency Response and ensure the implementation of rapid, effective and principled response to emergencies in line with the Christian Aid strategy. To support in disaster preparedness and early warning and support capacity building of partners and communities towards strengthening Humanitarian response.

Key outcomes

  • Ensuring through efficient planning and project & budget management that projects are delivered on time, within budget and deliver high quality outputs and impact.
  • Compliance with financial policies and procedures including budget-variance analysis, reporting requirements and contribution made to other team members in the development and implementation of partner capacity building and training.

About you

Candidates should have Undergraduate qualification in the Social Science or equivalent from a recognized university. Specialized qualification in emergency and/or development work is highly preferred. They are expected to have at least three years of humanitarian response experience with an international organization and possess excellent knowledge of humanitarian issues, policies, principles and standards, major global actors, and humanitarian coordination mechanisms.

The role also requires fluency in English knowledge and proven experience of Project Cycle Management and monitoring, evaluation and learning methodologies.

Senior Climate Change and Energy Advisor for Africa

About the Role

We are seeking to recruit a mid-level climate change and energy professional to support our policy and advocacy projects on climate justice and energy access in a way that maximises relevance to and impact in Africa. The post aims to lead Christian Aid’s energy strategy, focusing on the African continent. Within the energy transition out of fossil fuels and into the renewables framework, this post will seek opportunities to advance the renewable energy access agenda at the national and regional levels and strategic opportunities to connect to global processes.   This role is recruited on a national contract basis.

Reporting to the Climate Justice Lead, you be the focal point for implementing a specific project on energy access which will focus on shifting finance out of fossil fuels and into renewable energy and researching the role of MDBs in financing renewable energy. You will align the climate justice and energy access policy and advocacy with the country priorities in the Africa Division, the  Christian Aid Strategy ‘Standing together’ and the Global Climate Justice policy and advocacy strategy. You will provide strategic support to partners and helps deliver high-quality interventions, requiring a solid understanding of the pan-African and key national contexts.

You will also undertake additional work with the Christian Aid global team and African regional partners on policy and advocacy towards implementing the Paris agreement on climate change, loss & damage and ensuring adequate climate funding for adaptation, loss and damage, mitigation and resilience is targeted to most vulnerable communities.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need to be quick, approachable and adaptable. You will Master’s qualification in any subject related to climate sciences, international development or any related degree with at least five years of senior management experience. You will have experience in climate justice, energy agenda and renewable energy access, particularly in Africa and experience developing advocacy strategies and advocating and influencing a range of decision makers – e.g. AU, AfDB, UN bodies,  regional bodies, etc.
