POSITION REPORT TO: Foreman, Carpenter

OVERVIEW:

Lays building materials, such as brick, structural tile, concrete/cinder, glass, gypsum, and terra cotta block to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers, and other structures.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to and receives assignments, instructions, and direction from the Foreman.
  • Reads and interprets instructions and documentation and plans work activities.
  • Measures distance from reference points and marks guidelines on working surface to lay out work.
  • Spreads soft bed (layer) of mortar that serves as base and binder for block, using the trowel.
  • Applies mortar to the end of the block and position the block in the mortar bed.
  • Taps block with the trowel to level, align, and embed in mortar, allowing the specified thickness of the joint.
  • Removes excess mortar from the face of the block, using the trowel.
  • Finishes mortar between brick/block with a pointing tool or trowel.
  • Breaks bricks/blocks to fit spaces too small for whole brick/block, using the edge of a trowel or brick hammer.
  • Determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses, using plumb bob, gauge line, and level.
  • Fastens brick or terra cotta veneer to the face of structures, with tie wires embedded in mortar between bricks, or in anchor holes in veneer brick.
  • May weld metal parts to steel structural members.
  • May apply plaster to walls and ceiling, using the trowel, to complete repair work.

Painter

 DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs surface preparation and preservation, maintenance, and repair services onboard Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessels and prepositioned ships in DGAR that are either leased to the US Government or owned by the United States Government. Work includes but are not limited to:
  1. Surface preparation and preservation of rusted/corroded interior and exterior surfaces, machinery, and various foundations onboard ship.
  2. Preparation of substrates or surfaces for preservation (wood, fiberglass or GRP, aluminum, and various ferrous and non-ferrous made materials) using ultra-high-pressure hydro-blasting machine or hand-powered tools, whichever is applicable and suited for the job.
  3. Primer, paint and all preservative compound preparation or color mixing in accordance with ship’s standard and applicable procedures.
  4. Application of preservatives on prepared surfaces or repair of damaged coatings following the existing or ship’s required paint coating scheme and schedules, i.e. metal treatment compound to marine primer and enamel, primer to non-slip coating compounds, anti-fouling or bituminous compounds, varnish, etc.
  5. Maintenance of painting tools and equipment used in surface preparation and preservation work.
  6. Cleaning of engine room, pump room and bilges and miscellaneous equipment drip pans.
  7. Performs handling and rigging services to support shipboard repair jobs, removal, and installation of equipment and structures.
  8. Works on high structures of the ship using scaffolding and fall protection devices, and in the environment of shipboard hazards and operating machinery.
  9. Part of Riding Gang onboard ships deployed away from DGAR on an as needed basis to continue maintenance requirements began while anchored in the lagoon.
  10. Personnel is required to work for an additional two (2) hours every regular working day as an expected requirement delineated under Spec Item 3.4.2 of A-06 Contract.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Familiar with US Navy standard/general requirements on preservation of ships in service.
  • Knowledge in different types/classes and uses of preservatives and painting or surface preparation equipment’s, application of various types of paints, abrasive sand, non-skids, thinners, and solvents.

OVERVIEW:

Under the supervision of the Foreman, the Carpenter constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard. Uses Carpenter’s hand and power tools. Conforms to Building Codes. Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to the type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of the structure or fixture to be fabricated.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to and receives assignments, instructions, and direction from the Foreman.
  • Reads and interprets instructions and documentation and plans work activities.
  • Performs a wide variety of carpentry-related tasks, including new construction, remodeling, renovation, and demolition.

OVERVIEW:

Under the supervision of the Superintendent, manage a team of Carpenters to erect, install, and/ or repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, or wallboard. Understands Building Codes and the use of Carpentry hand and power tools. Understands blueprints, sketches, or building plans to derive information pertaining to understanding the requirements of the structure or fixture to be fabricated.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists and provides input to identify key success factors for the Carpentry crew.
  • Provides leadership to cause the creation of organizational structure and processes required to fully execute the requirements of services and is responsible for the execution of Carpentry services, quality, subcontractor performance, and construction cost.
  • Evaluates Carpentry service execution for compliance to contract, design data, schedule, cost budgets, and quality, advising the project team of status, issues, impacts, risk, and cost influence factors on to go” scope.
