Founded in 2011, CrossBoundary is a mission-driven investment firm committed to unlocking the power of capital to make a substantial return while creating a lasting difference in frontier markets. We take a transaction-centered approach to frontier markets. CrossBoundary provides investment advisory services, having developed a specialized expertise in unleashing investment across all sectors in fragile and frontier markets. Our advisory clients include governments, development finance institutions, private equity firms, Fortune 100 companies, and research institutions.

In 2017 CrossBoundary launched the first Mini-Grid Innovation Lab for Africa, a dedicated research and development fund for testing business model prototypes on mini-grids. Over 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity. CrossBoundary conservatively estimates that at least 100 million of these people are most cost effectively served by mini-grids today. The Innovation Lab is supporting the sector to become more commercially viable by trialing new business ideas with developers in the field and then sharing the results of these experiments with the sector. The Lab has two objectives:

  1. Improve the unit economics of mini-grids so that they are able to provide more power, to more people, at less cost.
  2. Build the case for mini-grids so that government, investors, and donors can make decisions about how to best integrate mini-grids into the overall electrification mix in Africa.

Job Description

CrossBoundary’s Innovation Lab is recruiting a full-time Associate to support the Innovation Lab.

(NOTE: Would you like to know the BIGGEST CV mistake you can make? Find out plus the Top 8 Ways To Make Your CV Stand Out.)

You will support the Innovation Lab’s work on two principal objectives. The first is working with mini-grid developers to identify and test innovative solutions to the mini-grid business model, managing an iterative process of piloting and refining ideas. Based on the results of these experiments, your second objective will focus on identifying the most successful solutions and working with developers and technology and industry partners to scale those innovations, thereby directly changing the mini-grid business model.

CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills – the Innovation Lab will look to you for practical insights on how to improve the mini-grid business model to bring more power, to more people, at less cost.

    • Develop creative iterations to the most promising innovations, based on early findings of business model impact and hurdles developers face in implementation
    • Alongside the Lab Lead, oversee the deployment of $2.2M of R&D funding to mini-grid developers conducting iterative, cutting-edge trials to change the mini-grid business model
  • Assess each innovation’s impact on the business model using the Lab’s unique dataset of over 800M data points on rural customer behavior
    • Use the Lab’s financial model to evaluate the impact of each tested innovation on the mini-grid business model, incorporating analysis from the Lab Data Lead
    • Partner with the Lab Data Lead to identify iterations with the largest potential to improve the business model based on the analysis conducted
  • Communicate the Lab’s findings on the potential of each innovation to key governments and leading funders and advocacy players in the sector

    • Craft regular newsletters sharing the Lab’s latest learnings with over 500 off-grid energy experts
    • Organize and execute roadshows bringing mini-grid developers to top donors and investors in the sector, to share findings from the Lab’s most promising innovations and realize the funding support needed to scale those innovations
  • Develop the tools and partnerships needed to enable developers to incorporate the most promising innovations into their day-to-day operations
    • Create commercial frameworks for mini-grid developers to partner with leading technology and industry partners
