Internship Area: Research Scientist – Intern (2 position)

The KEMRI internship program (KIP) seeks to develop a pool of young talent adequately exposed to working in the research industry. After the planned one year (Non-renewable) internship program, the candidates will have gained practical workplace experience to enable them to have a competitive edge in their job search. It is from this background that KEMRI-CGHR Kisumu seeks to recruit two (2) interns in the below mentioned field;

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s / Diploma Degree in Medical Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Medical
  2. Laboratory Technology or Biochemistry from a recognized university in Kenya
  3. Be below thirty (30) years of age

Terms of Engagement:

Appointment in the Internship program will be for a period of one year. The successful candidate (s) will be paid a monthly stipend of shs. 25,000 for a degree holder and shs. 15,000 for a diploma holder without any other benefits. Interns will be expected to take up a personal accident cover and medical insurance cover for the period of internship

Data Specialist

Job Description

Reporting to the Data Analyst, the Data Specialist will be responsible for the data management procedures of the various sites within Shigella Surveillance Study components. S/he will be expected to work on various databases and therefore should be able to prioritize tasks to meet set deadlines.

Qualifications

  1. Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics or Statistics from a recognized training institution
  2. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in working with data management preferable within a rigorous research setup
  3. At least 2 years’ experience working with Open Data Kit(ODK),RED cap and other web-based and tablet-based data capture systems
  4. Excellent Microsoft Office skills
  5. Experience working with online database management systems and statistical analysis

Skills and abilities

  3. Attention to details and good work ethic
  4. Good judgment in problem solving, awareness of own limitations and strong internal motivation
  5. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet set deadlines

Specific duties and responsibilities

The data Specialist will be required to;

  1. Conduct 100% source data verification, validation and discrepancy management
  2. Perform data cleaning and quality assurance and control
  3. Ensure all missing data are captured in compliance to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards and within strict study timelines
  4. Ensure that data is routinely backed up, anti-virus scans are conducted and security measures are adhered to in order to protect data
  5. Troubleshoot and solve common electronic data capture system problems
  6. Ensure timely and accurate data entry and validation
  7. Ensure timely response to data requests
  8. Provide field support to the study teams, as needed
  9. Perform any other duties as assigned by the PI

Terms of Employment: Employment is on a one-year contract with a probation period for the first 3

  1. months and salary is as per the stated grade.

Clerk (Community Interviewer) 

KMR 10 – (30 Positions)

Location: Siaya County

Reporting: Reports to the field supervisor

Required qualification and Experience

  1. Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education grade D+plus
  2. Certificate or experience in computer packages
  3. Must be residents of the study sites
  4. Good command of English, Dholuo and Swahili languages is required
  5. Have at least one year experience in collection of epidemiological and demographic data
  6. Experience in Enterics related studies will have added advantage
  7. Accident-free driving experience of motor bike with valid Class G and F driving license
  8. Familiarity with and valid certificate Good clinical Practices

Job Summary

The Community Interviewer will work under team leads and will be responsible for collecting timely and accurate data from a given number of participants assigned on a daily basis.

Specific responsibilities

  1. The Community Interviewers’ responsibilities shall be as follows:
  2. Timely collection of accurate demographic and morbidity data from study participants according to
  3. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards using tablets
  4. Ensuring that all the study questionnaires are completely filled during the interview
  5. Resolve all forms with discrepancies and keep good documentation of work done.
  6. Attend all weekly meetings in time and report on progress of work
  7. Be courteous, respectful, proactive, conscientious, punctual and hardworking
  8. Be a team player

Terms of Employment: A one-year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a
probation period for the first 3 months and salary is as per the stated grade

Registered Nurse

Registered Nurse , J/G KMR 7 

Location: Siaya County Reports to: Study Coordinator

Job Description

The registered Nurse will report to the Study Coordinator and will be responsible for implementing care interventions based on study participants needs, and filling work is conducted in the highest standards possible as per the Shigella Surveillance study protocol. S/he must be flexible and work within the existing Ministry of health (MoH)structures, in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity.

The position shall be based in Siaya County.

Registered Nurse , J/G KMR 7 ( 3 positions)

Reports to: Study Coordinator

Job Description

  • The registered Nurse will report to the Study Coordinator and will be responsible for implementing care
  • interventions based on study participants needs, and filling work is conducted in the highest standards
  • possible as per the Shigella Surveillance study protocol. S/he must be flexible and work within the existing
  • Ministry of health (MoH)structures, in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability
  • and integrity. The position shall be based in Siaya County.
  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma in any of the following Disciplines: Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing,
  • Nursing, Kenya Registered Midwifery, Nursing/Midwifery, Nursing/Mental Health and
  • Psychiatry or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
  • Registration Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya;
  • Valid Practising Licensing from Nursing Council of Kenya;
  • Experience in pediatric care management and enteric disease studies
  • Fluent in English, Dholuo and Kiswahili languages is added advantage
  • Proficiency in computer application skills from a recognized institution; and
  • Familiarity with and valid certificate Good clinical Practices

Duties and Responsibilities.

  1. Assessing study patients and clients and establishing their health care needs ;
  2. Planning and implementing care interventions based on patients’/clients’ health needs;
  3. Collection of rectal swabs and whole stool from children as per the study protocol;
  4. Ensuring infection prevention control providing appropriate healthcare services;
  5. Administration of prescribed medication;
  6. Providing health education
  7. Counselling on identified health and socio-economic needs to patients/clients;
  8. Referring patients and clients appropriately;
  9. Ensuring a tidy and safe clinical environment; and
  10. Ensuring safe custody of the nursing equipment and nursing records.
  11. Terms of Employment: Employment is on a one-year contract with a probation period for the first 3
  12. months and salary is as per the stated grade.
