Assistant Director Radio-Communication and Maritime Search & Rescue

Job Purpose

Responsible for maritime assistance in search and rescue in accordance with International Conventions and national legislations relating to the search and rescue

Job Description
Duties and responsibilities

  • Executing the SAR plan in cooperation with the sub- regional maritime rescue coordination centres;

Person Description

For appointment to this grade, an officer must:-

  • Master’s Degree in any of the following; Maritime Affairs, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;
  • Certificate of Competency Class 1 (II/2) in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping 1978,as amended
  • Should have experience in search and rescue for a minimum period of three (3) years;
  • A Management Course lasting not less than Four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;

Assistant Director, Marine Environment

Job Purpose

Responsible for ensuring protection of marine environment from shipping activities in accordance with International Conventions and national legislations relating to the marine environment.

Job Description
Duties and responsibilities

  • Co-ordinates the development of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waterways
  • Supervises the review and update of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
  • Co-ordinates the implementation of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
  • Co-ordinates the implementation of strategies for monitoring and preventing oil spills in the coastal and inland waters
  • Co-operate with relevant stakeholders in the protection of marine environment from shipping activities
  • Conduct of pollution prevention inspections of Kenyan ports and navigable waterways
  • Conducting public awareness campaigns on prevention of ship source pollution.

Job Purpose

Responsible for investigation into maritime casualties and charges of incompetence of seafarers. They are also responsible the receipt, preservation and safe disposal of wrecks in line with international conventions and national legislations.
