  • The Kenya Medical Research Institute is committed to providing the youth with opportunities to acquire, sharpen their knowledge and gain technical/practical skills to complement their studies in order to enhance their employability in line with the Kenya Vision 2030. The KEMRI Internship Program (KIP) seeks to develop a pool of young talent adequately exposed to working in the research industry. After the planned one year (non-renewable) internship program, the candidates will have gained practical workplace experience to enable them have a competitive edge in their job search.
  • KEMRI-CGHR HIV-Research Division Kisumu has an internship opportunity in the following field;
    • Position: Administration -1 position
    • Location: Kisumu County
    • Reports to: Senior Administrative Officer

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution in any of the following disciplines: Business Administration/Management/Commerce, Human Resource Management, Finance, Economics or any related field.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
  • Computer proficiency

Terms of Engagement:

  • Appointment in the Internship program will be for a period of one year. The successful candidate (s) will be paid a monthly stipend without any other benefits. Interns will be expected to take up a personal accident cover and medical Insurance cover for the period of internship

  • CGHR HIV-Research Division Kisumu has an internship opportunity in the following field;
    • Position: Laboratory -2 position
    • Location: Kisumu County
    • Reports to: Laboratory supervisor

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields; Medical Laboratory Sciences Laboratory Sciences, Analytical/Applied, Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Sciences/Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology or Biotechnology or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Registration Certificate issued by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) where applicable; or any other recognized regulatory body;
  • Valid practicing license from Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists where applicable;
  • Proficiency in computer application;

Research Scientist

  • Project description: Dengue Surveillance and Control in Selected Counties of Kenya.
  • The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) seeks to carry out epidemiological surveillance of dengue in Mandera, Wajir, Kilifi, Mombasa and Trans Nzoia County. The study aims to determine the public health threat posed by dengue virus and to identify potential factors that lead to sustained occurrence of dengue outbreaks. Currently, routine diagnosis of dengue is not conducted at the health facility laboratories countrywide. As a result, the true burden of dengue in Kenya remains unknown. The project is based at the Centre for Infectious and Parasitic
  • Diseases Control Research (CIPDCR) in Busia. The project seeks to fill the following position.
    • Position: Research Scientist, Job Group KMR 6 (1 position)
    • Reports to: Principal Investigator

Job Summary:

  • The successful candidate will work with the Senior Research Scientist to coordinate epidemiological surveillance activities in the field while overseeing field workers, perform bioassays and support laboratory operations.

Job Specification

  • Perform sample collection, processing, preservation, storage, and shipment.
  • Perform laboratory procedures including PCR, ELISA, PRNT
  • Propagate and maintain cell cultures and cell lines
  • Follow and ensure proper compliance with protocol procedures and institutional guidelines.
  • Maintenance of study documentation and records.
  • Support the drafting of SOPs, operations manuals, quality assurance documentation, training materials and others.
  • Attend all required trainings and ensure activities are carried out in accordance to stipulated guidance from the principal investigator.
  • Train, guide and supervise field workers in the field and laboratory.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and undertaking of field activities.
  • Manage and monitor equipment, reagents, consumables, and other resources needed for research activities.
  • Oversee data entry and data cleaning in timely manner.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any area of Biological Sciences with preference to Molecular Biology.

Skills and abilities

  •  Demonstrated knowledge of virus isolation and characterization will be added advantage.
  •  Knowledge in PCR, ELISA, PRNT and other neutralization assays is highly desirable.
  •  High proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

  • Should be more resilient and able to work in challenging and difficult field settings of North Eastern counties of Kenya.
  • Excellent team player and willingness to work odd hours including early mornings, and late evenings.

  • Employment is a one year renewable contract with a probation period for the first 3 months. Salary is negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.

  • The Project has the following Internship opportunity:
    • Position: Data Analyst Intern
    • Reports to: Principal Investigator
    • Location: Busia

The Data Analyst intern will be trained to:

  • Conduct electronic data collection
  • Use database management software
  • Download and upload data from mobile devices such as Tablets and Smartphones.
  • Participate in data retrieval, analysis and interpretation.
  • Collate, query and clean data coming in from the field sites including flagging out inconsistencies and/or errors arising from data obtained from the field as part of routine data checks
  • Perform various data manipulations, analyses and generate reports and tables as requested.
  • Deal with routine problems arising in the course of data handling.
  • Perform additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, computer science or any related field from a recognized training institution
  • Evidence of having carried out a supervised research project during undergraduate studies/ attachment in a research facility for a minimum period of 3 months an added advantage.
  • In addition, the applicants must:
    • Be a Kenyan youth below 30 years of age; and
    • Provide a Certificate of Good Conduct.

The Internship programme will be for twelve (12) months.

Please Note:

  •  A monthly stipend of KSh. 25,000 and a supplementary allowance of Ksh. 5,000 per month will be given without any other benefits.
  •  A successful Intern will be expected to take up a personal accident cover and medical insurance cover.
  •  The project WILL NOT offer employment after the completion of internship.
